P.S. I named my little daughter Sarah

Plan B

Mrs. Rainsferd told me that Sarah has a son who lives in Italy. I immediately decided to fly to Rome. When I arrived, I called Sarah's son, William and they decided to eat lunch together in a cafe. When we sat down and showed William his mother. He didn't believe me and told me to stop making these stories up. He got up and left and I didn't think I would ever see him again. He later came back and I explained everything I knew. In turn, he told me his mother didn't get hit by a car; she ran her car into a tree. Most of my family was very upset with me for digging this horrible period of time up from history. They all wanted to forget it but they never understood how it affected someones life. On the other hand, my father-in-law was very proud of me and happy that everything happened. He was able to finally let go.

What I'm Going To Do

I have become obsessed with the story of Sarah. I am determined to meet her and explain my side of the story. I have recently found out that Sarah moved to New York to get away from the place that took her family away from her. She had been depressed and needed to start another life. I am unfortunately in the middle of a divorce with my husband because I am pregnant and my husband doesn't want to have another kid. I am taking my daughter to New York so we can take a break from each other and try to work things out. When we arrived in New York, we used the Yellow Pages to find Sarah but we could only find her husband. When we get to her house, my hands are sweating and I am so nervous. Sarah's "daughter" comes to the door and lets me in. I wait for her mom, but when she finally comes in, she looks nothing like the picture I have. I am informed by "Sarah" that my Sarah died in a car accident two years ago. I became very upset because I really wanted her to know our story.....

My Family's Side of the Story

My husbands side of the family was not Jewish but they did know about the roundups. My family was looking for a new apartment and the one they moved into belonged to Sarah. The landlord knew that that Jews were all taken and she never expected people to come back. When Sarah came back my family had no idea what happened them. When she found her little brother, she shrieked so loud that it never fully left my family's ears. My step father never talked about that day again but secretly, he sent money to Sarah for years to help her get on with her life. He never got to tell her he was sorry.

The Story Of Sarah Starzynski

Our story starts with a young jewish girl named Sarah Starzynski. She was only ten years old when the French police came to her apartment in Paris and arrested her family. She was taken as well but before she left, she locked her little brother in their "secret hiding spot" which was a little closet in the wall. She took the key with her and put it in her pocket. The poor girl believed she would come back for her brother later that night. She thought the french police would not hurt her and her family. They were taken with many other jews to a holding spot where she saw many horrifying things and was extremely hungry and thirsty. They were then transported to a concentration camp called Auschwitz where she was separated from her parents. The next day she saw a french policeman that she recognized from her street. She became friends with a girl named Rachel and they decided to escape. They slide under a hole in ground and were immediately caught by the policeman Sarah knew. She begged him to let them go so she could go get her brother from the closet. He finally gave in because he felt guilty and gave her enough money to get to Paris. Rachel and Sarah walked a really long way until they reached a farm where they asked the residents who were living there for food and shelter. It was an old couple and they helped Sarah get food and eventually helped her reach Paris to find her brother. When they arrived in Paris at the apartment, people were already living there. She ran into her old room and unlocked the closet where her brother was "still hiding". He had suffocated and died from no food or water. The old couple took her away from the dreadful place . She disappeared for many years and did not keep in touch with the old couple who had helped her.

A little history of Vel’ d’Hiv’

This tragic day that led many Jews to their death was called the Vel' d'Hiv which is also known as Rafle du VĂ©lodrome d'Hiver. The French police came around and arrested Jews in almost every neighborhood in Paris. Approximately 13,125 Jews were arrested that night and many were taken to horrible concentration camps such as Drancy or Auschwitz, where most were exterminated. After the war was over, the French president, Jacques Chirac apologized for the horrible actions that were done to the Jews. However, it has never been forgotten.
